Former minister in BJP government and former BJP MLA, Sundersinh Chauhan, joined the Congress. Chauhan, a former minister and parliamentary secretary, who was denied a ticket for the 2017assembly elections by the BJP, joined the Congress in protest against the “anti-farmer” policies of the ruling party. Chauhan was an MLA for four terms and was also a minister of state (MoS). He was inducted into the Congress by state unit president Amit Chavda and Gujarat Congress in-charge Rajiv Satav.
Chauhan had headed the social justice and empowerment department and held the labour and employment portfolio as an MoS. He represented the Mahemdabad seat in Kheda for four terms, till 2012, when he was defeated by Congress candidate Gautam Chauhan. He was not given a ticket for the 2017 assembly polls. After his induction into the Congress, Chuahan told mediapersons that he left the BJP because of its “anti-farmer” policies. Satav said Chauhan’s experience will come handy for the party in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Congress spokesman Manish Doshi said another former MLA of the BJP, Lalji Mer, who had quit BJP recently, would join Congress.
