A top Bangladeshi official named the National Civil Register (NRC) in Assam as an internal matter of India. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally assured Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina that the people left in the NRC list will not be returned to their country. Hasina’s political adviser HT Imam said, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has personally assured our Prime Minister that those people who are not in the NRC list will not be sent back to Bangladesh.
Imam did not give details of the interaction between the two Prime Ministers but said, “We have been assured from India that repeated steps will not be taken to create political instability in Bangladesh.” Especially when we (Bangladesh) are heading towards our national election at the end of this year.
BJP general secretary Ram Madhav had said in September that those who do not have names in the final list of Assam NRC will be sent back to their country. Imam said that Indian High Commissioner Harsha Vardhan in Dhaka also repeatedly told us that there is no need to fear of this and we should not worry about it. He said that this is an internal matter of India. He said that as a result of partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, a large number of people had traveled on both sides. Imam said, during partition, once the people were divided, the people who settled on both sides and wherever they settled became citizens of that country.
